‘Feed The Birds’ from the movie Mary Poppins is a famous song based on the fact that back in the old-days, Londoners would buy breadcrumbs or seeds from vendors around the city just to feed the birds. When I was a kid, one would often see old people feeding the birds from their front gardens. It’s a habit that seems to have died out, so it was cool to see Hassam from Palestine doing just that. I saw him in the front garden of his Victorian Terrace in Willesden, NW London with a handful of breadcrumbs and surrounded by pigeons. He feeds them every morning, and they often perch on his hands and shoulders. He told me that he loves living in the UK and that the pigeons are his friends. I took this shot and reflected how cool it is that a guy from Palestine is unknowingly reviving an old London tradition.
