This is Kitty O’Shea, AKA Kitty Candyfloss. I bumped into her in Prét A Manger in Holborn. She was spending the day in London with her friend, an anthropologist, who was studying the way that people in the streets interact with Kitty. In the short time that I spent with Kitty, I could see that she had a very positive effect on the people that she met. Several passers-by banged on the window of Pret to get Kitty’s attention and then manically waved with broad grins spread across their faces. This sort of thing occurred several times during our brief encounter. Her friend said that it happens continually when Kitty is out in the street in this persona. Perhaps there’s something about the sense of escapism that you see in an obviously fun person wearing brightly colored and extravagant clothing that makes us feel good because we see that there is an alternative to our regimented and mundane lives? I’m no anthropologist and don’t really have a clue, but what I do know is that Kitty seemed to shine a light of joy on everyone that she met which can’t be a bad thing..
